June 2, 2025The König Brewery and Duisburg
König Pilsener has been brewed in Duisburg for more than 165 years – and only here. It was no coincidence that our founder Theodor König chose the then independent municipality of Beeck in 1858. König Pilsener has been brewed in Duisburg for more than 165 years – and only here. His reasoning: the onset of industrialization would attract many people to the region. And all these people would like to drink a good beer after work.
Duisburg is more than just our location. Duisburg is our home. We feel connected to the city. And we believe that many Duisburg residents also feel connected to us. We live this solidarity by getting involved in Duisburg: in clubs, in organizations, among our colleagues at our Social Day “Köpi kümmert's” (Köpi cares). And we show our connection to Duisburg not only on every label. Our connection can also be tasted with every sip of König Pilsener. The name of the yeast we cultivate for König Pilsener, which is used exclusively by the König Brewery worldwide, is also a testament to our roots: Saccharomyces Beeckii.
About the König Brewery
In 1858, Theodor König founded the brewery named after him in Duisburg. His vision: the large coal deposits in the vicinity promote industrialization and attract many people to the region in search of work. And all these people want to drink a good beer after work.
Theodor König's guiding principle was “Quality is paramount” – and this principle remains unchanged in the brewery more than 165 years after its founding. Our master brewers still only use the best raw materials for our beers: selected hops, special König yeast, the best barley malt and brewing water of the highest quality from a nature reserve in the region. And still today, beers that meet the highest standards are brewed with passion and experience. Today, more than ever, we place great importance on acting responsibly and sustainably. In 2024, for example, we achieved a milestone in sustainability with the commissioning of an innovative energy supply system – and, as in the early days of the brewery, we are once again relying on industry in the immediate vicinity. Climate-neutral industrial waste heat from thyssenkrupp Steel now provides thermal energy for the brewing processes. This enables the König Brewery to reduce its annual emissions by up to 75 percent, making it one of the most sustainable breweries in Germany.
